Fishing Report

December 5, 2009

Things are looking better on the Sacramento River in the past few days. We are getting a good push of some fresh fish coming through. Hopefully it stays strong all month. I think by mid next week, we will be at the peak of this year's season. Below is a picture of one of the fish we hooked today...

November 16, 2009

We had a great opening day of Salmon season. We landed three out of four fish. Talk about big, beautiful, chrome fish!!!!  The meat was bright orange and nice and firm... I hope the rest of the season stays this strong...

( I guess they can't all be KINGS )

November 6, 2009

The Steelhead fishing is still very hit or miss out there. Not sure if its the lack of Salmon, or the warmer water that is causing a tough year, but something is. We are still giving it hell, and catching a few fish. We also caught a bonus fish today on roe...

October 10, 2009

I went Steelhead fishing on the Sacramento River today for the first time this season. I figured I better start scouting around because I have some clients mid- next week. It was a bit slow, but we did have a great time. There are some really nice fish around, but they are scattered all over. It was definitely an egg bite...If you are into the Steelhead thing, check back often, I will be fishing chrome until Salmon season opens Nov.16-Dec 31st

September 6, 2009

What a great day of fishing on the Sacramento River... We caught our limits of some beautiful keeper sized fish. I had a couple of fly fishing guys that were awesome. It's always nice to have a pair that can throw the fly rod right handed or left handed (ambidextrous)... I also put John on his biggest fish ever on a fly rod... Way to go John!!!

(Can I say, what a Sacramento Pike Minnow!)

August 30, 2009

I took Mike and Angie out today for a little Striper action on the  Sacramento River. We caught lots of fish between 18" and 22" but threw them all back, keeping an 8 and 5 pounder.  Nothing large, but lots of fish. Between 6am to 8am we put 30-40 fish in the boat. What a fun day...

August 16, 2009

Today, I went out on the Sacramento River with my buddy Raith Heryford for a solid day of Striper fishing. We caught three fish in the fifteen pound range, one 8 pounder, and one 3 pounder with dozens of shakers. We used everything in the book, from throwing rubber worms, to tossing flies, to jigging... What a fun day.

August 2, 2009

It was a slow day of fishing on the Sacramento River, but we did manage to put Mike from Long Beach, CA on his first Striped Bass ever... Way to go Mike!!! It has been really hit or miss this past week, but I know by the middle of this month, it will be red hot fishing. Check out the picture below of Mike's first Striper...

July 18, 2009

Today,  Bob Boucke and I fished the Sacramento River to search for the first signs of summer run Striped Bass. We put the boat in at dusk and started fishing. Needless to say, we found fish and I feel confident I will be mopping them up through mid- September. YES!!!! The time has arrived...

Nothing large landed today, but I did lose a pig at the boat. All the fish were good eating size though...

Sacramento River Butt Fishing!!!

The bite was red hot on the Sacramento River for Halibut today. With a small craft advisory issued, we crossed our fingers and went anyway. The morning started off a bit rough with blowing a tire on the boat trailer at 3:30 am on Hwy 99... Not fun. We adapted and overcame our challenges and finally got to the boat launch at Knights Landing. The winds were calm and the river was looking beautiful. The forecast called for west winds to 20 mph, with gusts well over 35... Needless to say, they were wrong and we ended up having a great day...

December 6, 2009

It was very cold on the water this morning. We hit the water early and didn't catch a fish until the wind lifted. We only hooked one fish today, but it was a beauty. Steve landed this beautiful 34 pound buck...

November 21, 2009

Today, We landed one out of four hooked. Besides all the fog and leaves in the water from all that wind, we had a good day. Hope the fog lifts tonight. There was zero visibility this morning...

November 8, 2009

The water finally cooled down out there. We still had to fish really hard today to catch what we did, but they were some nice ones. We landed three, loosing a few fish both on the anchor and on the drift, but overall a great day with some good company.

October 17, 2009

The Steelhead are in the river in good numbers now, but the problem is, we need the water to clear up a bit. The rains took a few days to muddy-up the river. Friday, a friend drove to Ward's Landing on the Sacramento River to check how muddy the water was. He said it was stained, but fish-able, and tomorrow should be "the day". We went, and over night the river turned to chocolate milk. It would clear up Tuesday, but we have a 50% chance of rain Monday. That is how Steelhead fishing goes. We still made the best of it, and caught some smaller wild Steelhead. If we can get the water to clear, the fishing will be great.

2009 Striper Season

Well, I officially guided my last Striper trip of 2009 today, and ended it on a good note. I had a pair of dads and their young sons, and we caught some really nice fish. I was even told I was a "hero"... LOL

It has been a real up and down journey since March of this year, with lots of really challenging obstacles to overcome; like low water, and of course, less fish. I want to personally thank all of you that came out and fished with me this year. I had a great time on every trip, and look forward to fishing the Spring run of 2010. I will be taking a few weeks off to go deer hunting, and then I will start booking Steelhead fishing trips in mid-October. Thanks again, and I will see you all soon. FISH ON !!!

September 5, 2009

I had a group cancel a trip I had booked for today, so I called my buddy Raith to see if he wanted to go fishing. We hit the water early, around 4:15 am, and had two in the box before light. We ended up both catching our limits of some beautiful Striped bass, going 18,15,14 & 5 pounds. Raith also shot a few dove and we had a coyote puppy  looking down the barrel of the 12ga, but we couldn't muster up the guts to shoot this little pup... He looked two much like my puppy. What a great day on the Sacramento River...

August 23, 2009

Yesterday we had a hard time finding the fish because they cut the water flows on the Sacramento River, and the fish dropped back. Today we found them. Here are a few pictures of today's fish.

August 15, 2009

This is my last week before I have my first clients booked for the summer run Striped Bass, so I figured I better get my butt out there and find some fish... Bob Boucke and I went out yesterday and today to start finding fish and we did, not to mention I hooked into the largest Striper I ever have on the fly rod. Within 30 seconds this fish almost spooled me running upstream, WOW!!!  It wrapped around a tree, snap, and it was gone. But that is has it goes sometimes. If you are looking to get out and catch some beautiful Stripers this summer, give me a call, I still have some good dates left.

July 22, 2009

What a fun day on the water with Captain James of the California Dawn. The trip was scheduled through Johnson's Bait and Tackle with only 18 on the boat. We were going to fish for rock cod, but it ended up being to windy to leave the bay, so we changed gears and started Halibut and Striper fishing. I am glad we did... What a great day...

(First BUTT ever, what a good start)
